Shocking Deaths in MMA History
MMA markets itself as a brutal, money-making spectacle. When the objective is to render opponents senseless by kicking and punching them in the head, it is no surprise when someone is seriously hurt and sustains fatal neurological damage and that is some cases could lead to death.

Here are 5 MMA fighters who died in the Cage:

5) Douglas Dedge

Douglas Dedge was an American mixed martial artist who was the first known American competitor to be fatally injured in an MMA fight and the first death in the modern era of MMA. Dedge competed at an unsanctioned "World Super Challenge" event in Kiev, Ukraine. After tapping out following multiple strikes to his head, Dedge stood and almost immediately collapsed back to the mat. Dedge was then taken to the Kiev Institute of Surgery where he died two days.

4) Michael Kirkham

Michael lost a amateur fight in via a technical knockout, a bout that should have resulted in a disqualification of his opponent. Kirkham was given an automatic 30-day medical suspension for the TKO loss, but it doesn't appear that he followed up with a doctor. Two days after the suspension ended, Kirkham suffered a brain hemorrhage in his pro debut at the University of South Carolina Aiken Convocation Center on June 26. He died two days later at the age of 30.

3) Mike Mittelmeier

Mittelmeier died following an unsanctioned bout in Bolivia. After taking down his opponent and applying a leg lock, his opponent illegally kicked him in the head with the heel of his foot, knocking him out. The fight was stopped and Mittelmeier was pronounced the winner by disqualification, a few seconds later he collapsed (later being diagnosed with a cerebral hemorrhage that left him comatose). It is alleged that the promoters did not have a doctor or ambulance standing by and it took a long time before he was transferred to a hospital.

2) Ramin Zeynalov

27-year-old Ramin received a strong blow to the head during the fight and lost consciousness. Doctors were not able to bring the athlete back to life and the cause of death was a brain hemorrhage.

1) João Carvalho

MMA fighter Joao Carvalho, 28, died following a rough third-round technical knockout loss in Dublin, Ireland. According to Nobrega Team, the medical staff of Total Extreme Fighting followed all the safety protocols after the fight, and rushed Carvalho to the Beaumont Hospital 20 minutes after the contest after he started to feel bad. Carvalho underwent brain surgery immediately and stayed in critical condition for 48 hours.
